Dr. Chameen Sams

I would like to begin by announcing some great news at the start of the new year, the ID7 DMEK trephine has been awarded a US patent.

Starting out as an idea during the COVID-19 pandemic, this innovation turned into a very fulfilling five-year project. From the initial concept and early design work through multiple rounds of refinement and optimisation, the goal has always been to develop an instrument that could simplify and enhance DMEK surgery.

The journey involved significant research, development of proof-of-concept through clinical trials, and securing patents for protection of intellectual property. The most recent step in the process is associated with collaborating with Corza Medical, allowing for commercialization of the device, bringing it closer to surgeons around the globe.

ID7 DMEK trephine should be available for clinical use from Q2 2026. Hopefully, this will simplify the DMEK surgery procedure, making it easier and safer, and also reproducible, ultimately benefiting both surgeons and patients.

The process of innovation in the field of ophthalmology can never be the work of an individual, and I would like to thank all those involved in making this innovation possible. It feels great to watch something go from an idea to a patent, and ultimately, a revolutionary device.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the next chapter bring.
