Keratoconus… or kerato-CONE-us? 🌟
At AUSCRS, if you’re speaking about keratoconus, dressing as a cone-head is entirely appropriate!
Safe to say it’s the first time I’ve presented a scientific talk wearing a cone on my head. This was my first AUSCRS meeting in almost 10 years, and it was a pleasure to be back presenting on achieving excellent cataract outcomes in patients with complex corneas.
For these patients, outstanding outcomes depend on much more than technically successful surgery. Whether it’s keratoconus, previous refractive surgery, corneal scarring, irregular astigmatism or corneal dystrophies, success comes from understanding the cornea in detail and matching the right intraocular lens to the right patient. Careful planning and personalised IOL selection can make the difference between a good result and an exceptional one.
These challenging cases are some of the most rewarding in my practice, and I’m fortunate to work closely with many excellent optometrists who entrust me with their patients. It’s always a privilege to help patients who may have been told they’re “too complex” achieve the best vision possible.
