First Visit
From your very first appointment we are aimed to ensure you have all the information about your eye care and needs, including any available solutions. It doesn’t matter whether you are visiting for your regular eye exam or any other reason; our task is to offer comprehensive care in a comfortable setting.
Prof. Chameen Sams pays close attention to every single patient using the latest technology for diagnosis and treatment.
General Eye Examination & Care: What to Expect
It starts with a detailed consultation concerning your vision problems, symptoms, past medical history, as well as your eye surgery and/or treatment history in the past. This is very important in order for your practitioner to have a clear idea of your personal requirements for eye care.
In your consultation, various tests might be carried out to investigate:
- Visual acuity and prescriptions
- Eye pressure and the likelihood of developing glaucoma
- Corneal and lens health
Risk of developing cataracts and other age-related eye diseases - Health of your retina and optic nerve
- Any dry eye symptoms
Based on your eye problem(s), additional testing using imaging techniques may be necessary. Professor Samarawickrama is an expert in all aspects of cataract, cornea, and refractive eye care, such as laser vision correction and cornea therapy.
Patients must take the opportunity to ask as many questions as possible during consultations.
Visual Field Testing
The visual field test is a simple, pain-free process that measures your side vision. It allows for subtle abnormalities in your peripheral vision to be detected, which can otherwise go unnoticed during routine daily activities.
The visual field test can be done to help diagnose or monitor:
- Glaucoma
- Optic nerve problems
- Neurological issues that cause vision loss
- Diseases of the retina
- Unexplained visual problems
The test involves looking through a special machine and responding when small flashes of light appear at various positions within your field of vision. The visual field test is quick and simple.
Professor Samarawickrama will review your results along with other aspects of your eye test.
Billing & FAQs
We aim to make your appointment process straightforward and transparent.
Referrals
A valid referral from your GP, optometrist, or specialist is generally required for specialist consultations and Medicare rebates.
Medicare & Private Health Insurance
Consultations and many procedures may be eligible for Medicare rebates. If you hold private health insurance, some surgical or hospital-related costs may also be partially covered, depending on your level of cover.
Common Questions
How long will my appointment take?
Initial consultations may take between 1–2 hours, depending on the complexity of your condition and any diagnostic testing required.
Will my pupils be dilated?
In many cases, dilating eye drops may be used to allow a more detailed examination of the retina and optic nerve. Vision may remain blurred for several hours afterward.
Can I drive after my appointment?
If dilating drops are used, you may not feel comfortable driving immediately after your consultation. Arranging transport home is recommended where possible.
Do I need surgery immediately if a condition is found?
Not necessarily. Many eye conditions can be monitored or treated conservatively before surgery is considered.

Appointment Preparation
To help us provide the best possible care, please prepare the following before your appointment:
- A valid referral letter
- Medicare card and private health insurance details
- Current glasses and/or contact lenses
- A list of medications
- Previous eye test results or medical records if available
If you wear contact lenses, you may be advised to stop wearing them for a period before certain examinations or procedures.
Because some tests may temporarily blur your vision, we recommend allowing extra time for your appointment and considering alternative transport arrangements if needed.
